Thinking about how best to access data spread across lots of web-services. PHP/Zend doesn't seem to come with any multiple-GET/PUT functionality. Ideal solution would implement memcached & a simple DSL (maybe like SQL) - eg. a BBC version of GQL/YQL etc.

Nice reasons why we (at work) are going to spend the next month reducing our technical debt rather than adding features.
'Our eventual conclusion was that there was no reason to have code that had passed the integration step but was not yet deployed."

Yeah, haven't found Selenium *that* useful for browser testing. Was it ever intended for that?? Selenium Grid is just about running 100 integration tests in parallel, not 100 tests on different browser/os combo's.

Interesting that Silverlight (or rather CLR) got friendly with Ruby, Python etc. and now their cloud stuff is being friendly with PHP. 5 years ago I'm sure this would generate FUD (cf. embrace & extend), but I think MS PR (less evil ;) has got better in the last few years, well done them.

Before bomber planes came in the existence WWI aircraft crew used to take a sack of bombs in to their biplane cockpits & lob them over the side after flying in to enemy territory [1]. I like practical actions in the face of technical inperfection.

It's slowly dawning on me in the past couple of weeks that the Internet is going to be one big database/cms. I didn't really understand the semantic web in the formality of RDF terminology, but every organisation publishing data models & opening up web services, unified by query engines (like YQL, GQL...) actually makes practical sense to me.
Not relational, not key/value ...

Forked from MySQL.
Useful introduction to the non-relational database trend.

Really nicely written SVG tutorial (if you want to draw pie charts). I don't think it's really happening on the client-side still, but Batik is great.

Important thing to note if you were to animate a fly-over of a route vs. a track.

Fascinating that the boundaries of creative control on a film project are as dependent on collaboration as software projects. The worst projects I've worked on as a developer is where people stick to their tightly-defined roles, shunting requirements back and forth between disciplines, and conversely the most enjoyable ones have been where huge overlaps in responsibilities exist (which causes conflict, but this is better than gaps IMHO).
Flex DZ again. Nice UI, the smoothness is still not quite there. Needs cunning JPEG streaming.
Made me laugh. In our bit of the BBC the producer's role differs from project to project. Some producers think they are designers/developers, some like budgets & policy more than the thing they are producing, but the best ones create an environment in which their project, and the talent working on it, can flourish. I like Jason Hoffs' explanation, 'a movie project is like a very sick patient who is dying in the emergency room...".
